What is Medicare?

Medicare is health insurance provided by the federal government. The program is available to people who are 65 or older, certain younger people with disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease. There are four parts to Medicare: Parts A-D.

Medicare Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.

Medicare Part B covers certain doctors' services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.

Medicare Part C is offered by private insurance companies and cover the same benefits as Medicare Parts A and B. Medicare pays these companies to cover your Medicare benefits, except for hospice care, which is still covered through Medicare even if you choose a Medicare Advantage Plan.

Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans is optional coverage for prescription drugs that can be added to Medicare and to some Medicare Supplement Plans.
